POEMS : DR. MAHENDRA BHATNAGAR

[1] TO  STARS

Why do the stars shiver in the sky?

Are their feet chained?
Restrained breaths are suffocated,
Do they also face oppression by weapons?
Are they too scorched by the fire of exploitation, every moment?
They look tortured, perturbed, weak.
Some, simply shiver,
Some are shooting, measuring the limit of the sky!
Are the worldly people at guilty?
In life’s dreams — of happiness and sadness,
while the world is sleeping, unconscious,
And is encircled from head to feet
in the cover of night,
Feeling bored in loneliness,
When every particle is sad and heavy-hearted,
Whom they are cursing then?
Is shivering their only life?
Appearing happy down the ages,
Is their youth  perpetual?
Falling, hiding continuously
Are they playing hide and seek?
Sowing vine of nectar like affection, and
laughing, stirring together instinctively
in their own world!

[2] DARKNESS-FELLOW STARS

Stars are the perpetual partners of deep darkness!

When bright new dawn descends
the grimy night departs
They, too, silently go
with their bag and baggage somewhere!

Seeing the fascinating evening near
The eternal indestructible moon rises
They also return; though kept hidden in the sky
                  throughout the day!

When dense darkness covers the day
These numerous stars come and surround the sky,
They want the extinguishing extinction
                  of the full moonlight!

The affectionate union of light and darkness
Denotes the cheer and pains of life,
The life becomes happy when
rise with fall and laughter with tears mingle together!

[3] THE WAKING STARS
The stars awake at midnight!
When all habitants —
humans, trees, animals, birds — of the world sleep!
    The stars awake at midnight!
They remain vigilant like watchmen
And say fables to each other, silently
Oh, not feeling drowsy even a moment
They sparkled and flashed!
      The stars awake at midnight!
The jingling voice of the cricket and,
Wailing voice of the distressed woman, too,
Become fusioned in the free wind,
reaching the doors of the fickle stars!
      The stars awake at midnight!
Slumber comes equipped with its army
and says, “Dear ! take a nap!”
so that I seize all your glamour;
but they don’t surrender to such temptation!
      The stars awake at midnight!
All night they twinkle without being dim,
Never closed their eye-doors,
Never attained dreams of life,
Poor helpless!
Remained aloof  from pleasures and pain!
      The stars awake at midnight!
