एकलव्य का अद्वितीय धनुर्विद्या अभ्यास देखकर गुरुवार द्रोणाचार्य चकराए कि अर्जुन को पीछे छोड़कर यह श्रेष्ठ न हो जाए। उन्होंने गुरु दक्षिणा के बहाने एकलव्य का बाएँ हाथ का अंगूठा मांग लिया और यह सोचकर प्रसन्न हो गए कि काम बन गया। प्रगट में आशीष देते हुए बोले- 'धन्य हो वत्स! तुम्हारा यश युगों-युगों तक इस पृथ्वी पर अमर रहेगा।'
'आपकी कृपा है गुरुवर!' एकलव्य ने बाएँ हाथ का अंगूठा गुरु दक्षिणा में देकर विकलांग होने का प्रमाणपत्र बनवाया और छात्रवृत्ति का जुगाड़ कर लिया। छात्रवृत्ति के रुपयों से प्लास्टिक सर्जरी कराकर अंगूठा जुड़वाया और द्रोणाचार्य एवं अर्जुन को ठेंगा बताते हुए 'अंगूठा' चुनाव चिन्ह लेकर चुनाव समर में कूद पड़ा।
तब से उसके वंशज आदिवासी द्रोणाचार्य से शिक्षा न लेकर अंगूठा लगाने लगे।
